Music

The Music Department is dedicated to providing quality music instruction for students preparing for transfer as music majors to a four-year institution, students interested in pursuing a career in commercial music and the recording arts, and students from the community interested in lifelong learning opportunities. Our curriculum provides basic preparation for careers in music or further under-graduate study, and is designed to provide a balanced education in the many facets of musical experience. It is the goal of the department to develop each student's musical and intellectual potential to the highest level of individual capability.

The Music Department offers instruction in the following areas of study: Theory and Musicianship, Jazz Studies, Band & Orchestra, Vocal/Choral Studies, Piano & Organ, Guitar, History and Literature, and Music Industry Studies. We offer programs of study in Music Major Transfer and Music Industry Studies and maintain a student run internet radio station.

The Music Major Transfer program is a comprehensive program of theory, literature and performance in which our students complete lower-division music major requirements in preparation for transfer to four-year institutions. The Music Transfer Program is designed to give students the knowledge and skills in music theory, musicianship, piano proficiency and performance that is typically expected of music students transferring as juniors to four-year institutions.

The department offers a vocational education certificate program in Music Industry Studies (MIS). The MIS Recording Arts certificate prepares students for a career in the music and recording industries. The music industry, along with a growing number of manufacturing and information delivery industries, needs audio experts and musicians with technical skills and production experience. Students learn about the creation and production of recordings of music, and learn how to complete recording projects that are typical of those found in contemporary professional recording and production environments.
