What is the addiction studies program?

The Diablo Valley College addiction studies program is a CAADE accredited program, which prepares students for a variety of rewarding careers in human services that specialize in addiction treatment and drug prevention.

As an addiction studies student you will develop an in-depth understanding of the addiction process and how to motivate someone towards positive change. You will also learn of the many employment opportunities in the addiction field.

Specifically, students will gain:

  • basic listening and group facilitation skills;
  • an understanding of addiction, family systems, recovery and substance abuse prevention issues;
  • familiarity with various assessment tools, treatment plans, and charting protocols;
  • an understanding of legal and ethical concerns for workers in the addiction field.


Students in the addiction counseling certificate program accrue 360 hours in field placements, gaining hands-on experience and training in an addiction treatment, detoxification, drug prevention or DUI programs.

Those who work in the addictions field enjoy a challenging and rewarding career working with diverse communities and populations providing a greatly needed service to individuals and the community.

The addiction counseling program prepares students for a career as an:

  • Alcohol and drug abuse counselor,
  • Community services worker,
  • Substance abuse prevention/intervention specialist.


While many students enter the program to earn a certificate or degree, many others are credentialed nurses, counselors, clergy, educators and other professionals wishing to update their skills or earn a specialization certificate in the area of alcohol and drug treatment.
