Apprenticeship/Construction

The Diablo Valley College construction program offers three different certificates of achievement: supervision and superintendency, construction and building inspection, and construction management. Each of these certificates prepares students for different positions within the construction industry.

As a construction student, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the various fields of employment in this well paying industry.

Construction management and construction supervision students will learn how to:


  • analyze and interpret all types of construction drawings and documents;
  • calculate quantities of material, labor, and equipment needed for a project;
  • control field operations through cost analysis and productivity analysis;
  • apply data analysis to identify construction problems, specify goals and execute projects;
  • utilize the schedule to organize complex constructions projects;
  • identify and understand the major elements in construction labor and contract law;
  • understand, interpret, and request the types of construction surveys needed to specific projects;
  • apply bid strategies to marketing proposals for building and heavy construction projects;
  • assist in resolving construction disputes, claims and arbitration/litigation.


Construction and building inspection students will learn how to:

  • analyze and interpret all types of construction drawings and documents;
  • understand field operations of a constructions and building inspector;
  • analyze structural and nonstructural codes;
    understand Title 24 ñ energy and handicap codes;
  • analyze mechanical, plumbing and electrical.
